The rapid growth of the Christian church in Iran — one of the world’s most suffocating Islamic strongholds — is yet further demonstration that the Kingdom of God reigns triumphant.

Tat Stewart, an American who grew up partly in Iran with his missionary parents and witnessed the beginnings of the Iranian Revolution, recently reflected  on what he saw happen to the Church during that time of regime-driven persecution  that began 39 years ago: “The church  used to be a sleepy church, because there was so much prosperity and so many foreigners living in Iran. They (Christians) went from sleepy, once a month members, to a church on its knees.”

According to statistics, there were only 500 known Christians in Iran before the Revolution of 1979. Now there are an estimated 360,000! The Revolution forced believers to meet in secret and hold church services within the privacy of their homes.

Given that the Iranian church is the fastest growing in the world today, our partner ministry at work in Iran is meeting the crucial need for house-church pastor training and discipleship for converts from a Muslim background. One student from the ministry’s leadership training program remarked: “I have been praying for four years to have this chance to study and prepare to serve Jesus. We have been without a pastor for four years. The forty members of our house church are desperate for me to return and teach them what I’ve learned.”
