The experience of imprisoned Christians in Iran is a stark reminder of Islam’s war against Jesus and his followers.
Evin Prison in Tehran, Iran, is notoriously known as the world’s most brutal prison, where people are treated like less than animals and torture is routine. There are an estimated 92 Christians imprisoned in Iran today, and ICC has documented at least 11 believers held in Evin Prison.
According to the U.S. Treasury Department’s statement in May of 2018, “Prisoners held at Evin Prison are subject to brutal tactics inflicted by prison authorities, including sexual assaults, physical assaults, and electric shock… senior regime officials regularly downplay the torture and abuse that occurs in Evin Prison, the abuse of prisoners, including political prisoners, continues once sham inspections into the prison conditions end.”
Maryam Rostampour, a now 35-year-old Iranian woman, spent 8 months in Evin Prison for her faith before being released and granted asylum in the US.
It has been 7 years since her release but she still thinks often of those who remain in Evin Prison:
“Some days you can’t breathe because you don’t know what’s going to happen to you the next day. When people experience living in Evin Prison they will never be the same again. The stress is too much. We can’t be the same people. We can’t be as happy as before. We don’t enjoy activities like normal people because all the time we think of those who are still there. Iran is our country. It’s our home. We miss the streets and the mountains. We have family and friends there. We’re heartbroken for our country and pray that one day our country can be free from this brutal regime.”
“For You have been a stronghold to the poor, a defense to the needy in his distress, a shelter from the storm.” — Isaiah 25:4
