The world spotlight shone on Turkey for its treatment of a Christian missionary once again illuminates the stark difference between Islam and Christianity.

On July 25th, American Pastor Andrew Brunson was transferred from prison and placed under house arrest, only days after the Turkish court rejected his appeal for release.

Until his fourth court hearing scheduled for October 12, Brunson is forbidden to leave the house or exit the country. His wife, Norine, thanked Christians around the world for lifting up her husband in prayer and encouraged believers to continue praying. Following July 18th’s hearing, Norine shared this on her public Facebook page:

“The name of the Lord was absolutely glorified! As he (Brunson) explained why he was here, he gave the gospel. He publicly forgave all those who have come against him, forgiving as he has been forgiven. There have been many prayers for the legal side of things, but let’s just pray for a miraculous release.”

Pastor Brunson is accused of espionage as the Islamic leadership of Turkey assumes he functions the way Muslim religious teachers function — as paid employees of the State. Islam is a system — not merely a religion — where the legal authorities and religious authorities are, effectively, a single entity overseeing Turkish society. Islamic leaders have great difficulty in imagining any other relationship between “Church” and State.

If convicted of the false charges brought against him, Pastor Brunson could face a 35-year prison sentence in the country where he has lived and ministered for over 23 years.

“Keep me as the apple of Your eye; hide me in the shadow of Your wings.”
— Psalm 17:8
